Ciné Doc - Documentary for everyone

Ciné-Doc is committed to promoting the distribution of documentary cinema and strengthening the connection between films and audiences by placing participation and engagement at the heart of its mission.

Since 2016, through the ‘Documentary Rendezvous of Romandy Cinemas,’ Ciné-Doc has each month—from September to April—accompanied a documentary film tour across a network of around fifteen partner cinemas in French-speaking Switzerland. Over 90 events, often with filmmakers or expert guests in attendance, foster rich discussions with the audience.

Additionally, Ciné-Doc offers a broad range of cultural mediation and participatory activities in partnership with various institutions: mediation in schools, in correctional facilities, collaboration with the Ciné-Seniors program, and screenings for migrant communities.

1. The origin of the Let’s Doc Project

Today, there are numerous local and regional initiatives that support the distribution of creative documentary films and foster their engagement with audiences. From Ciné-Doc’s Documentary Rendezvous of Romandy Cinemas to Roadmovie, the Jura Doc Month, Cinéculture’s school programs, and BE MOVIE in the canton of Bern, these initiatives are more necessary than ever.

However, until now, no national project has united documentary promotion across Switzerland. In contrast, France’s Mois du Doc has been thriving for 20 years, its Belgian counterpart is gaining momentum, and LET’S DOK has launched with great success in Germany.

Inspired by these projects and to address a gap highlighted by industry professionals, Ciné-Doc launched a new nationwide event in 2023: Let’s Doc! – Documentary Week.

The pilot edition, held in June 2023, saw a promising turnout, with over 100 partner venues across Switzerland. This exciting experience showcases significant potential for film distribution and confirms the need for such a unifying event.

2. Let’s Doc! Second edition november 2024

Following the success of the pilot edition in June 2023, Ciné-Doc aims to establish Let’s Doc! as an annual event, allowing Switzerland to celebrate the creativity and diversity of documentary cinema each year.

The upcoming second edition will take place in November 2024, extending from one week to an entire month, allowing more flexibility to accommodate the needs and schedules of partner venues.

Let’s Doc! will feature public screenings not only in cinemas but also in various partner venues: libraries, community centers, churches, museums, cafés, town halls, and other sociocultural spaces.

Most screenings will be event-based, with opportunities to meet filmmakers, engage in discussions with special guests, and enjoy community gatherings, including refreshments or communal meals.

Additionally, cultural mediation and participatory activities will be organized in collaboration with institutions such as schools, correctional facilities, senior centers, migrant support organizations, and programs for at-risk youth.

With this approach, blending cultural and social outreach, and its strong presence in villages and smaller towns, Let’s Doc! aims to expand access to a wide range of audiences and enhance social cohesion.

With over 100 partner venues committed in record time for the pilot edition, Let’s Doc! shows promising potential for growth.
